Composition and cinematography

You can learn a lot about good cinematography from considering what makes for good stills photography.

Learn the following rules of photo composition and apply them to your own work.

http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2012/04/12/10-rules-of-photo-composition-and-why-they-work/

TASK:

Choose 6 frames from your photo-storyboard and analyse the composition of each image.

Are there examples of good practice in your work? Did you follow the rule of thirds? Did you consider leading lines? Did you avoid clutter?

Are there images that show poor composition or a lack of consideration? What aspects of poor composition can you highlight.

Produce an annotated sheet illustrating your chosen images and highlighting the pros and cons of the composition in each of the six frames.

P1. RESEARCH ROTOSCOPING

For the first AO of the Visual Effects unit you must understand and analyse the use of 3 different effects types. We've done MATTE and GREEN SCREENING - the last will be ROTOSCOPING.

Write on your blog a response to the following:

1) Find a definition and briefly explain what rotoscoping is.

2) Plot out a brief history of rotoscoping describing the key points in its development and use in film and TV.

Have a look at the articles here, here and here.

3) Find a use of it in a film and analyse why it was used, how it was used and critique the final piece (is it convincing etc). To help you with this, have a look at either Scanner Darkly or one of Ralph Bakshi's rotoscoped animations (Lord of the Rings 1978, Fire & Ice 1983).

4) How could we use rotoscoping in After Effects and for what effect would it be a useful too (CLUE: think about the ROTOBRUSH and the floating banana).

MAKE SURE YOU PUSH YOURSELF IN TERMS OF A RESPONSE - DOES IT SOUND LIKE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. EMBED VIDEOS AND IMAGES.
