P1 ANNOTATING A SCREENPLAY

TASK

The screenplay describes the action and dialogue of a scene but will not normally refer to camerawork or editing. These decisions will be left to the director to make. A first step into breaking down scenes into sequences of particular shots will be to annotate the screenplay directly, dividing it up into segments that will be shot as individual camera set-ups.

Taking the extract from the first episode of BBCs Luther, annotate the script dividing up the sequence into as many different shot-types as you think appropriate to tell the story.

P1. SCREENPLAY FIRST DRAFT

In the original X-Men screenplay the scene we analysed today is described as follows:

EXT. THE X-MANSION - LATER THAT AFTERNOON
We witness the daily events at Xavier' School for the Gifted:
Students study, play sports with their powers, etc.
A MONTAGE OF SCENES THEN FOLLOW...
Your script will need to have much more detail than this! For Friday, ensure that you have a draft two-page screenplay ready to show the rest of your team. Use the screenplay guidance handouts to help you as well as this:

P1. X-MEN SOUND TIMELINE

HOMEWORK TASKS

1. Post your sound timeline to your blog and describe in as much detail as you can how the music, voice-over, dialogue and sound effects work within the sequence to help establish the mood and tone of the setting.

2. Using the links on the left visit the blogs of the other members of your team and read their story pitches. In the comments section of the story post leave a comment, providing constructive feedback

P1. X-MEN SOUND ANALYSIS

TASK

Watch the clip and listen out for the following:

  1. MUSIC
  2. DIALOGUE
  3. VOICE-OVER
  4. SOUND EFFECTS

Watch the clip over again and for each of the four elements note down at what time each one appears and disappears on the soundtrack.

For example, do we hear sound effects at 0:05 seconds in to the clip lasting for 15 seconds, or is there dialogue at 0:45 seconds lasting 2 seconds?

Make notes in whatever format you find most helpful and post your initial results to your blog
