P1. SHORT STORY

TASK

A . Using the extract from the short story above as your starting point, imagine what a film based on this passage might be like.

On your blog, write a 250-word pitch for your movie idea.

STORY PITCH

Keep it simple – hit the basic beats of the story:

1)     HERO - Who are you rooting for – who is the hero/protagonist(s)?

2)     SITUATION - What situation are they in at the beginning of the story?

3)     NEW OPPORTUNITY -What new opportunity presented to them (kicks story into gear) ?

4)     GOAL - What ultimate goal/visible finish line are they trying to pursue by the end?

5)     CONFLICT - What is the conflict – what makes achieving that goal impossible?

You can adapt the story as faithfully or as loosely as you like, although there should be at least some links with your pitch and the original extract.

B . #TWEETPITCH - distill your idea down into a 140 character tweet and post that to your blog also!

P1. Drive Sound Analysis - Sound Effects

For the Sound Unit we have to analyse THREE types of sound. We've already done DIALOGUE with Misfits. Now we're going to sound effects and we'll use the clip we looked at before - the opening of Drive.

Start a blog post:

Sound Effect Analysis - Drive

1) Explain the PURPOSE of the diegetic (any sound, voice or piece of music that comes from within the world of the narrative) in the clip.

2) Analyse the effect of that the various sound effects has on the clip:
- Briefly explain the scene as to what is happening.
(A getaway driver (Ryan Gosling) waits for two criminals to commit a burglary. The Driver has a strict rule - he gives anyone who hires him a 5 minute window to commit their crime and get to the car or otherwise he'll leave them).

Now analyse the following explaining what qualities the effect have (volume, tone, pitch), and what each sound effect brings to the clip.

a) The ticking watch
b) The radio
c) The police radio scanner
d) Environmental sound (alarm, traffic, car engine, police siren).

Lastly describe how the sounds blend together and help create the tension mention the sound 'mix' - which is louder and when.
